One of the true icons of the Sunshine Coast has to be the SS Dicky shipwreck. The SS Dicky was shipwrecked on a Caloundra beach which was then named Dicky Beach in 1893. She was sailing from Rockhampton and as it arrived to clear Caloundra Head wild cyclonic weather forced the Captain James Beattie to run the ship aground to avoid hitting the rocks off Moffat Beach. Effort to refloat her were a failure.
100+ years on constant battering by the tides is slowly breaking the wreck down to the point that is will probably disappear in another 10 years.
